When workers of the world throw off the shackles of their fixed workplaces and liberate themselves from their cubicles, how will they find each other in the creativity-inspiring public spaces of the world's cities? At this session, we'll take the wrapper off an alpha version of the Breakout Operating System, a social wep app that's part Meetup, part social media aggregator, and part networking site for coworkers. Help us turn this amazing tool into something that can be used around the world to liberate people from the dull conference rooms and confining cubicles and experience work in the great outdoors.

Disruptive Organizing: Collaboration and Innovation in the Open Source City at School of Visual Arts

How can we reformat our cities and public spaces – and the architectures and technologies within them – as sites of collaboration and innovation? The open source movement is known not only for the innovation of robust operating systems such as Linux and Internet browsers such as Firefox but also as an emergent form of organizing based on collaborative production. Disruptive Internet technologies such as e-mail, blogging, instant messaging, Skype and Twitter have enabled the widespread availability of cheap, instantaneous global communication. These same technologies have engendered emergent forms of organizing in physical spaces including MeetUp groups, BarCamps (unconferences) and coworking communities. This presentation will discuss disruptive forms of organizing based on a current collaborative project, Breakout! Escape from the Office, which is being presented by The Architectural League of New York as part of the Situated Technologies: Toward the Sentient City exhibition.

The Future of Mobile Work at 60 Wall St Atrium

Flash-Mob Ethnography at Union Square Park

Taking a cue from an earlier exploration of Japanese convenience stores, we will be conducting flash-mob style ethnographic research. The session will begin with a short introduction to ethnographic research before heading out into the field. Working in teams of 3, we will explore and document the city using field notes, sketches, photography and video. Finally, we will pool our research together as a group and conduct some collaborative coding though a discussion of key themes. Please bring the following: laptop, digital camera, video camera, sketch book, pens, markers and pencils.

CitiLab-Cornellà will host a second beta version of a Breakout session with coworking facilities and lighting talk sessions the 14th of October in WTC Almeda Park (Cornellà).

We are inviting people form companies there as well as professionals with the possibility of moving for one day his workplace to an open space. We also make a call for volunteers to join us and help setting up thing, communicating proactively with people in the area and explaining what they are working in with ICT or issues related to their dayly tasks.

Flash-Mob Writing Sprint at The New School Atrium

Using the data and analysis from the two previous "Flash-Mob Ethnography" sessions, the group will write an article about the collaborative experience of data gathering and coding touching on the key themes raised throughout the research. We will write a short 800-1200 article for the Architecture League's Urban Omnibus forum about Breakout! and the Flash Mob sessions in particular. Please bring your laptop for this session.
